Artists’ Open Studio Tour slated
July 17, 2013 —
WAYNE COUNTY, PA — Wayne County artists will open their studios to the public free of charge for three days in the Wayne County Arts Alliance (WCAA) 2013 Artists’ Studio Tour on Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. In addition, several galleries, most of them in Honesdale, will exhibit numerous local artists’ works. Several new artists have been added this year.
“Visiting studios is a great opportunity for the public to see how art is made,” said Pauline Glykokokalos. “People will be proud to discover what outstanding talent we have living here—people who are our neighbors. It’s also a perfect excuse to take a drive in beautiful Wayne County,” she added.
One thing that has evolved since this annual tour began 12 years ago is that it will be easier to see more artists at fewer venues without so much driving. A number of studios and galleries will show more than one artists’ work at a given location. For example, Richard Lichtenstein, a sculptor and blacksmith, has invited three fabric artists and a painter/photographer to show their work at his studio in Oregon Township. The works of 11 artists can be seen in downtown Honesdale at eight locations.
Yanni Glykokokalos, one of the founders of WCAA, encourages young people to come on the tour. “I think it’s important for younger people to see art that’s not just in a museum, where they’re looking at something that’s dead, painted a long time ago, just hanging on a wall. Here, younger people get to see artwork in a friendly and more accessible environment, and they can to talk to the artist as well.”
He also pointed out an advantage of buying art directly from an artist at his or her. “You’ll find prices you won’t find anywhere else,” he said.
