Rent Money Readings return

KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY — On Thursday, June 21 at 7 p.m., the Liberty Free Theatre will kick off its second year of Rent Money Readings at the Beekman House Pavilion across from the Fat Lady Café with two comedies.

Chet Carlin and Valerie Mansi will read “Post-Its,” by Paul Dooley and Winnie Holzman. The play traces the history of a marriage from young love to mature love by looking at the Post-Its the couple have left for each other over the years. In “The Rental,” by Mark Harvey Levine, Rebecca Robbins is taken aback by a surprise birthday present brought to her by Ben Hudson.

Artistic director Paul Austin said, “Rent Money Readings are our revival of a community custom known as ‘Rent Parties’ that helped people survive the hard times of the Great Depression by passing the hat for whoever needed to come up with next week’s rent.” These fundraisers help defray the rental cost of The Liberty Free Theatre’s home base in Liberty.

The suggested donation is $20. The audience is invited after the performance to the Fat Lady Café for complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Call 845/292-3788.
