MILFORD, PA — The Pike County Historical Society (PCHS) will once again host “23 for History,” a marathon softball game in honor of Shohola’s Smoky Joe Wood. The game will be held on September 24 at the Little League Field on the east side of Milford. The event will benefit PCHS, with funds raised going toward a new roof. Players will be provided food and beverages courtesy of Jorgenson’s at the Dimmick, not only a sponsor of the event, but also provider of many willing participants in the game over the years.

Smoky Joe Wood garnered the nickname “Smoky Joe” due to the velocity of his fastball. An outstanding pitcher for the Boston Red Sox from 1908-1918, he had his best season in 1912, registering 258 strikeouts in 344 innings pitched. Joe lived in Shohola for many years, a true all-around sportsman.

The game will commence at 10 a.m., and there will be guest announcers and music. Awards are presented to both teams for Most Valuable Player and Golden Glove. There is a special trophy for Most Homeruns, but the consequence of a homerun is an automatic out, making the game a bit more interesting. Email pikemuse@ptd.net or call 570/296-8126.
