‘Narcoonah’ at CAS

July 21, 2011

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Art Society (CAS) will present “Narcoonah,” a two-person show featuring the work of Joni Wehrli and Dana Duke, at the CAS Arts Center at 48 Main Street, from Saturday, July 23 to August 28. There will be an artist’s talk at 3 p.m. on July 23.

“Narcoonah” means seeing or to see differently in an Australian Aboriginal language. Wehrli’s drawings, from the Different Anatomy series, were executed over three consecutive summers in Livingston Manor. They are composed of cut sections of gouache and watercolors, and take off from illustrations in medical textbooks. Duke created paintings, then photographed the reflections in the water to heighten the abstract possibilities and color juxtapositions, to produce works like the one shown here. Gallery hours are Thursday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 845/436-4227.
