Celebrating the arts in Honesdale

HONESDALE, PA — Honesdale’s Festival of the Arts weekend will take place on Saturday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition to shopping and dining at Honesdale’s many antique stores, galleries and restaurants, the weekend will feature entertainment under the Fred Miller pavilion on Main Street, street vendors with antiques and crafts and more.

Saturday entertainment will include Zumba, ballroom dancing, martial arts, readings by local poets and a community drum circle. On Sunday, there will be live performances from the Great American Musical Theater featuring local talent from the Jenkins Performing Arts Center.

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, the Park & Shop lot will begin to fill up with antique cars for the first “Car Cruize” of the season, with ’50s music by Ricki Z. Sunday at 1 p.m. The sixth annual Antiques on Wheels Parade will roll out, sponsored by Wayne County Ford, B&B Dodge, Baer Sports Center and Honesdale Mayor Jon Fritz.

In the fourth “Airing of the Quilts,” sponsored by A Stitch in Time, over 30 handcrafted quilts are displayed on Main Street. A Stitch in Time will also host a quilting demonstration on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Other demonstrations will include The Art of Mexican Cuisine at Fiesta on Main (1139 Main Street) on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11:30 a.m.; and The Art of Spinning at The Gentle Arts (613 Main Street) Saturday at 3 to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.

Also at the festival, the Wayne County Arts Alliance (WCAA) will debut its annual summer art event in which local artists create themed public artworks that are displayed around the county all summer. The event will take place on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Willow River Gallery, with the theme “Expressed Mail.”
