Beginning again after 75 years; Lake Huntington Fire Company opens doors and hearts to all comers: celebration planned for July 14

Lake Huntington Fire Department (LHFD) chief Jason Kraack, left, and Cochecton Volunteer Ambulance Corps Captain Herb Sawall unwrap the department’s 1937 Ward LaFrance in preparation of the celebration of the department’s 75th anniversary celebration on July 14.

“We used to have a three-day Firemen’s Field Day,” Ed said. “But we couldn’t continue that due to insurance liabilities.” Additionally, it was a lot to ask members to be continually volunteering for social events, beyond fire fighting duties. But with the new firehouse, and its sunny welcoming space, the company is hopeful that it can accommodate part-timeparticipation of anyone who might have as little as a few hours on a monthly basis. “Maybe you can’t give every day, but you might be able to give that one day that makes a difference,” Jason said.

“It’s the best thing I have ever done,” Evans added.
“Nobody’s here for the recognition. We’re here for the community, to do a job that needs to be done. That’s the thing that’s nice about fire service,” Jason said. “Whatever your age or ability, there’s a job to be done.”
