Mellow fun at Kadampa Meditation Center fair

GLEN SPEY, NY — The threat of rain, and indeed the rain itself, could not dissuade the local crowd from visiting the Kadampa Meditation Center, which hosted its ninth annual Fun Fair on Saturday, July 1. Patrons wandered the grounds in front of the Meditation Center’s World Peace Temple, where a series of tents, set-ups and flea markets offered a diverse array of clothing, jewelry and spiritual accoutrements. Fairgoers were also encouraged to plan an entire weekend at the center, where they could hike on the facility’s extensive trails or meditate in classes geared to kids and adults. Meanwhile, a special “kids’ carnival” was given its own corner, which featured games, a bouncy castle and a magic show from Bubbles the Clown.

Although the welcoming aura of the fair reflected Kadampa’s aims and ideals, the event was free and open to a public of diverse beliefs and interests. The vendors particularly enjoyed the opportunity to sell their goods to a receptive crowd.

“[It’s] a fun, friendly atmosphere that you get to enjoy, even with the family,” said Hazel Cologne, who sold crocheted items at a vendor’s booth called “That’s Sew Hazel.” Her wares were just one of many offerings that could be found in the scatter of tents, alongside earth crystals, necklaces and handmade soaps.

A musicians’ tent, occupied by a steady schedule of performers, kept that fun and friendly atmosphere steeped in spiritual meaning. “It’s beautiful; I’ve never been to the Kadampa Meditation Center before,” said Boston-based indie-pop guitarist Anjimile. “This is such a beautifully peaceful and mellow and community-oriented gathering. It’s really soul-nourishing, and I’m glad to be here.”

Even as the weather held out and gave in over the day, there was no shortage of people who were glad to be there—as attested by Walter Robbins of Bradenton, FL. “I bought a place in Barryville—couldn’t take the heat, so I got out of the state instead of the kitchen. But it’s the first time I’ve been here. It’s really nice, nice people—great little festival… I like events. I actually helped for years with Waystock in Waymart [PA]. I like to help out—[but] it’s more fun when you don’t have to do anything and just enjoy it.”
