LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Art Society will present “small things of unknowable value” by Matthew Bliss; “The Thing Is” and “Objet D’Art” by Paula Elliott; and “Encaustics” by Donise English at the CAS Art Center at 48 Main St. from January 7 through February 12. There will be an artists’ talk on Saturday, January 7 at 2 p.m., followed immediately by an opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Matthew Bliss creates small sculptures that give an impression of the monumental. These works bring to mind an urban artifact, but not something randomly discarded and stumbled upon, but rather an artifact that has been carefully considered and crafted with the utmost devotion to detail.

Elliott’s works on paper are derived from the question: What exactly constitutes a container? By shaping the form with successive layers of charcoal, a density of surface evolves creating an impression of material solidity.
English’s encaustic, hot-wax paintings, which she describes as visual journeys, are created using oil paint and wax in a series of layers with each successive layer responding to previously applied wax or paint.

Gallery hours are Thursday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
