CALLICOON, NY — As part of the CineArt series, the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) and the Callicoon Theater partner to present “Fences,” directed by and starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, who won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.

Troy Maxson (Washington) makes his living as a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh. Maxson once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates further tension in his family when he squelches his son’s chance to meet a college football recruiter.

The play “Fences,” written by playwright August Wilson, won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and in a 2010 Broadway revival both Washington and Davis won Tonys for their performances. The pair now star in the play’s film adaptation.

“Fences” will screen Friday, January 20 through Tuesday, January 24, nightly at 7:30 p.m., with matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Callicoon Theater is located at 30 Upper Main St. Admission costs $11 ($9 admission on Mondays and matinees) and $7.50 for children under 12 at all shows.

CineArt is a partnership between Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and the Callicoon Theater that promotes and screens independent, foreign and art films. A percentage of the profits and $1 per person from ticket sales benefit the programs and services of the DVAA.
