GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — “The Right to Vote: 100th Anniversary Commemoration” will be held at the Time and the Valleys Museum on State Route 55 on Sunday, November 5 at 2 p.m. The program starts with Charles Ford of Newburgh giving a talk on “The Making of the 19th Amendment,” including early movements from 1800 to 1834, suffrage movements around the world and suffrage champions including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Elizabeth Stanton, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth and Alice Paul.
This will be followed by the archivists from the Time and the Valleys Museum giving a presentation on early 20th century women of prominence in Sullivan County, including Nellie Childs Smith, the first female lawyer in Sullivan County; Phebe Low, who in the late 1800s was one of the earliest practicing female doctors in Liberty; and Elisabeth Worth Muller, founder and president of the Monticello Suffrage Club and more. The program is free for museum members and $3 for non members, and includes refreshments and Museum admission.
