Remembering glory days in the Catskills; A new cookbook celebrates the Vegetarian Hotel

THE CATSKILLS — In the heyday of Catskills resorts, Woodridge, NY was a thriving village in the Town of Fallsburg, where nearly a dozen hotels attracted summer clientele and weekenders from the big city. One of those resorts was the Vegetarian Hotel, catering to health-minded, mostly Jewish guests, who were seeking something more unassuming than the glitz and glamour and the non-stop pace of activities at places like The Concord and Kutschers.  Read more

Franklin John Gurney, Sr.

Franklin John Gurney, Sr. of Beach Lake, PA and formerly of Auburndale, FL, died on Monday, November 18, 2013 at Ellen Memorial Heath Care Center in Honesdale. He was 87.

As per his request, cremation services are being arranged by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale. There will be no public services.

Walter Patrick Heady

Walter Patrick Heady of Callicoon Center, NY died peacefully at his daughter’s home on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89.  Read more

The train was crowded when we pulled out of Secaucus Station, and I was comfortably seated by the window of a three-seater, sharing it with a guy from Middletown, NY. Engineer responds to Denning windmill controversy

Regarding the small privately owned wind turbine electric generator proposed to be placed above Yaegerville Road in the Town of Denning, it should be obvious to everyone that energy produced from clean accessible renewable sustainable “green” resources is better for everyone than to burn coal, or gas, or nuclear fuel in a thermal electric generation facility. We should encourage the use of wind energy. Each project though small, though tall, will be an incremental improvement for our environment.  Read more
