Free ice cream social, mansion tours at Grey Towers

MILFORD, PA – Free admission and a re-creation of Gifford Pinchot’s community ice cream social will be held at Grey Towers National Historic Site on Sunday, August 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Free visitor films will be shown throughout the day, including the film showing President John F. Kennedy’s September 24, 1963, dedication of Grey Towers. From 2 to 4 p.m., a free ice cream social, sponsored by the Grey Towers Heritage Association, will be held on the grounds. In lieu of a fee, the GTHA requests the donation of a non-perishable food item, which will be donated to a local food pantry.  Read more

Neversink ‘Afternoon of History’

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — The Town of Neversink and the Time and the Valleys Museum will host the Neversink “Afternoon of History” on Sunday, August 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Community Room of the Daniel Pierce Library. Old photos, records, stories and artifacts from the Town of Neversink will be shared, and local residents are encouraged to bring special history items to share. The Methodist Church is loaning some of its early church records for the afternoon. Call 845/985-2452.

Artful Bears to debut at picnic

MILFORD, PA — Bear sculptures will be revealed at the 14th Black Bear Film Festival’s Artful Bears Debut Picnic to be held rain or shine on Saturday, August 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The sculptures will be on display at the festival from October 18 to 20.

The picnic will be held on the lawn of the Pike County Community House. The 13 bears, each created by a local artist, will be distributed to various storefronts of businesses sponsoring them. The event will offer “bear maps” showing the locations of the bears after the festivities.  Read more

Birthday celebration for Liberty Museum and Arts Center

LIBERTY, NY — The Liberty Museum and Arts Center on Main Street will celebrate its 16th anniversary on Saturday, August 10 at 6 p.m. The evening will include an art and collectibles auction, food and entertainment. In addition to hosting shows and exhibits, the museum is currently partnering with the Liberty Free Theater to make the Liberty Museum home of a fully operational theater in 2014. Photo exhibit features exotic underwater life

MILFORD, PA — The Highlands Photographic Guild (HPG) will present an exhibit of underwater photography by Allen Levine, whose images of marine life from the Asian-Pacific waters showcase creatures of beauty and wonder rarely seen in the western hemisphere. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. during Art after Dark.

Biscuit And Smudge’ make their debut

MILFORD, PA — There will be a book-signing party to introduce “Biscuit, Smudge, and the Fisherman,” a children’s story written by Kevin Maloney and illustrated by Joann Wells Greenbaum, at Bluestone Studio on Saturday, August 10 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Everything happens for a reason?

That’s what they say, whoever “they” are. Depending on my mood, there are times when even I think it’s true. The past week has been rife with coincidence and synchronicity, yet I can’t for the life of me figure out what it all means. I’d be forcing the issue to call seeing “Grease,” now playing in Forestburgh (www.FBplayhouse.org), a coincidence per se (I was in the national tour a hundred years ago), but seeing it at the playhouse brought back a flood of memories.  Read more

Two openings at Alliance Gallery

NARROWSBURG, NY — “Half Hidden,” paintings and prints by Carol Radsprecher, and “Le dejeuner sur l’herbe,” paintings by E. Morisot, opens with a reception on Friday, August 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Alliance Gallery.

Radsprecher’s images, both paintings and digital prints, reference the human female body. After painting for many years, Radsprecher recently began experimenting with drawing and “painting” in Photoshop®. “I became enthralled with the seemingly infinite possibilities inherent in this digital medium,” she said.  Read more
