Do something about the weather

UPPER DELAWARE RIVER VALLEY — As the region swelters this week in the summer sun, Mark Twain’s famous line comes to mind: “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” As it turns out, however, a lot of local people and organizations are about to do something by getting involved in a year-long, multi-faceted community arts, science and history venture called The Weather Project (TWP).  Read more

One-man art show set for Liberty

LIBERTY, NY — Painter and poet Clyde Washington will present “The Inspirational Art Show: The War with God” at the Days Inn on Saturday, July 27 at 2 p.m. Washington presents a combination of surrealistic paintings accompanied by readings of his own poetry that enhance the message of each painting.

There will be a performance by blues singer and songwriter Debbie Fisher at 3 p.m. A portion of the show’s proceeds will be donated to the NAACP.

Tickets cost $15 and there will be an assortment of food available at a nominal cost. Call 845/ 292-1226.

Coal Town Rounders at The Cooperage

HONESDALE, PA — A “Concert in the Coop” at The Cooperage will be held on Friday, July 26 with the Coal Town Rounders, a hard-driving traditional bluegrass band that draws inspiration from all types of old-time string music. They have opened for the Lumineers, Emmy Lou Harris and The Carolina Chocolate Drops.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m., doors open at 6:45 p.m. BYOB. Donations will be collected at the door.  Read more

Live comedy with Marion Grodin at the Sullivan

ROCK HILL, NY — The Sullivan Hotel welcomes a night of comedy featuring Marion Grodin on Saturday, July 27 at 9 p.m. at the hotel.

Grodin’s credits include appearances on “The View” and “Conan,” as well as performances with the likes of Jerry Seinfeld and Roseanne Barr,

The evening will also host comedians J.F. Harris of The Del Close Marathon and The Great Canadian Laugh Off, and Rich Kiamco, who has been seen on “The Howard Stern Show” and “Bravo.”

Ardent hiker publishes guide to Catskills peaks

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Alan Via will present a program based on his book, “The Catskill 67: A Hiker’s Guide to the Catskill 100 Highest Peaks under 3500,” on Saturday, July 20 at 7 p.m. at Morgan Outdoors in the Catskill Park Room. He is only one of a small handful of hikers to have hiked all the Adirondack and Catskill 100 highest peaks, the latter with his dog Bookah.  Read more

New exhibits at DVAA

NARROWSBURG, NY — Three new exhibits opened at the Delaware Arts Center’s Alliance Gallery on Friday, July 12. Two of the exhibits are still on display and will be until August 3. The exhibit “Art in Bloom” was a group exhibition and featured floral arrangements that complemented works of art. It ran for one weekend only (see page 24).  Read more

Twenty artists present ‘Farm Art’

CALLICOON, NY — Twenty area artisans and the Sullivan County Farmers’ Markets Association will present an art exhibit titled “Farm Art: A Celebration of Local Foods” to be held at the Jennifer Reeves Gallery, 21 Lower Main St., on July 19, 20 and 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

A free cocktail reception and silent auction will be held July 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. Proceeds go to support the Sullivan County Farmers’ Markets. Refreshments will be provided by supporters of the farmers’ markets.

Graff on ‘bypassing parenting’

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Art Society will present author Laurie Graff reading her essay from the new anthology “No Kidding: Women Writers on Bypassing Parenthood” at the CAS Arts Center on Sunday, July 21 from 2 to 3 p.m. After the reading, CAS will also host a discussion of the essay’s ideas in light of its current exhibition “Out of Place,” exploring themes of parenthood, humor and anxiety.  Read more

Flamenco Trio to perform in PA

MILFORD AND HAWLEY, PA — The New York-based flamenco trio Segue will present “Ritmo, Color, y Pasion” on Saturday, July 27, at the Milford Theatre at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 28, at the Hawley Silk Mill at 2 p.m.

Segue offers flamenco music with a twist: in addition to having a guitarist (Jared Newman) and dancer (Eva Conti Algeria), this trio features a violinist, Sarah E. Geller.  Read more

Forgotten hero to be discussed

HONESDALE, PA — On Sunday, July 21 at 2 p.m. the Wayne County Historical Society (WCHS) will host guest speaker Linus Myers, who will present a talk about a local forgotten hero, Jeremiah Gunn of Honesdale, and his involvement in the Civil War battle at Gettysburg. Gunn, who died in 1889, is buried in the Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale.
