Railroad cars damaged

On July 23, The Honesdale Lackawaxen Shipping Association reported to the Honesdale Borough Police that a railroad car sustained damage sometime within the past few weeks. Upon inspection it appeared as though one or more unknown actors attempted to forcibly open two of the rail car doors causing minor damage. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police department at 570/253-1900.

Brooklyn man drowns in Delaware River Scenic Byway visitors center

BUSHKILL, PA — Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Superintendent John J. Donahue announced that a 51-year-old Brooklyn man drowned in the Delaware River on July 20 near Kittatinny Point on the New Jersey side of the park. This is the second drowning in the Delaware River within the recreation area in 12 days.  Read more

Special Delaware meeting planned

HORTONVILLE, NY — A special meeting has been scheduled for the Town of Delaware for Wednesday, July 31 at 7 p.m. at the town hall. The board will be considering proposed zoning changes. The change that has received the most attention at recent meetings concerns changing the zoning for parcels in the River Corridor, which would expand the number of special uses that might be created on those parcels.

Callicoon Democratic caucus attracts record crowd

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — An overflow crowd of 110 registered Democrats attended the Town of Callicoon caucus on July 21 in the Jeffersonville town hall, and enthusiastically endorsed Nancy Lee for supervisor, and Ken Hilton and Van Morrow for town council. Republican Kris Scullion, the incumbent highway superintendent, was cross-endorsed by the Democrats.  Read more

Results of Cochecton Democratic caucus

The Cochecton Democratic Caucus was held on July 18 at the town hall. Hollye Schulman, the incumbent town clerk, was nominated to run again for the position. Eileen Hennessy, the incumbent tax collector, was nominated again; Steven Sauer and Craig Fine, both incumbent judges, were also re-nominated. Dr. Paul Salzberg and Joan Glase were nominated to run for seats on the town board.  Read more

Environmental groups on gas leases; Did groups prevent drilling in the Upper Delaware Valley?

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — Now that Newfield Appalachia PA LLC and Hess Corporation have pulled out of their gas leases in Wayne County, it seems unlikely that there will be gas drilling in the county—or for that matter in the Upper Delaware River Valley—at any time in the near future.  Read more
