Failure of the House Farm Bill

On June 20, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on the House version of the 2013 Farm Bill. It received a solid trouncing, going down in defeat, 195 to 234. Obviously, the House leadership is challenged with a House majority that defies being led and with an inability to build consensus. A dose of cluelessness, too, as both Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, Collin Peterson, (D-MN) were convinced they had the necessary votes for passage until the vote was actually underway.  Read more

Learning from PA’s oil drilling history and water pollution

Here is my entry into the Wayne County Commissioners’ decision to pursue fracking for all of the reasons they have given. I own 250 acres in Venango County in northwestern Pennsylvania. At the turn of the last century, oil was king there and our property was drilled, baby drill. The wells were 1,500 to 2,000 feet deep with steel casings. Fracking is taking place in Venango County big time now and currently the wells are about the same depth.  Read more

On June 15th I was handed a piece of paper stating that I had successfully graduated high school. In my eyes it was meant to stand for accomplishment, hard work and liberation, but I saw nothing but a piece of paper. My four years of high school cannot be paraphrased with paper and ink, cannot be hung above the fireplace. Ravena, NY man arrested for unlawful imprisonment in Swan Lake

On June 25, 2013 the New York State Police at Liberty arrested John Irby, age 33, of Ravena, NY for Unlawful Imprisonment in the first degree, Reckless Endangerment in the first degree, Assault in the third degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  Read more

On June 25, 2013, State Police at Liberty were informed that BRETT LABBS, age 48 of Hawley, PA has succumbed to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident that occurred on June 24, 2013 in the Town of Thompson.  Read more

Gun maker considering Pike County Business Park

BLOOMING GROVE TOWNSHIP, PA — A Rockland County, NY gun manufacturer is looking to relocate and expand into Pennsylvania due mainly to increased production and stricter New York State gun laws, company officials said. Delaware River Sojourn sets a record

UPPER DELAWARE VALLEY — On June 24, which was day three of the 19th annual Delaware River Sojourn, after a day full of paddling on the river, Aiden Drusedum took the opportunity to broaden his skill set. Surrounded by four members of the National Park Service interpretive staff, Drusedum several times leaned his body over the side, upended his kayak and was turned upside down with his head underwater.  Read more

Eldred graduation: Class of 2013

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” were the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and were quoted by valedictorian Mikaela Balsano at the Eldred High School graduation ceremony. The 48 graduates of the Eldred Central School District walked fearlessly to receive their diplomas at the commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 22. The ceremony was held at the high school, outside on the front lawn in the bright early-morning sunshine.  Read more
