The shoot

I’m in the middle of a field surrounded by a dozen or so drunk extras in Day of the Dead face paint. The sun is setting fast. I’ve stood by my choice to have a dolly shot to open the party scene of the music video I’m directing, and we are taking the time to get it. But it means we will get far fewer other shots. Now I’m second guessing myself.

The set is beautiful with a makeshift altar stretching 20 feet up in the air. The band will place a coffin at the foot of it and the lead singer will emerge at a strange party and perform the end of the song.  Read more

Handwriting at Bethel School

BEACH LAKE, PA — Bethel School’s summer open houses resume on Sunday, June 30 from 1 to 4 p.m., with a special presentation at 2 p.m. by the Master Penman, Thomas M. Wasylyk. Wasylyk is a nationally recognized authority on handwriting and the author of numerous books and articles about handwriting. Livingston Manor Artwalk/Chalkwalk

‘Greatest show on dirt’

CALLICOON, NY — “The Little Farm Show” will be at Callicoon Farmers Market on June 30. Created by Tannis Kowalchuk, Brett Keyser, with original text and story by Jane Wells, “The Little Farm Show” celebrates sustainable small farming to delight the entire family.

Using shadow puppet dinosaurs, a clothesline, flamboyant hats, hip-hop beats, banners, songs and instruments including guitar, kazoo, accordion and spoons, Kowalchuk and Keyser present a brief history of the universe and farming, or “the greatest show on dirt.”

Comic Pinter play at Liberty Free Theatre

LIBERTY, NY — The Liberty Free Theatre, in collaboration with the Liberty Museum & Arts Center, will present a reading of Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter’s rarely performed comic play, “A Slight Ache,” kicking off a fundraising campaign to create a new state-of-the-art theatre. A musical and a live concert at the Hawley Silk Mill

HAWLEY, PA — On Saturday, June 29, Harmony Presents at the Hawley Silk Mill features folk, rock and pop award-winning songwriter Chris Ayer, followed on Sunday by a performance of “Violet,” a musical about a disfigured young women’s search for healing, performed by the youth of French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts.  Read more

‘Bug Music,’ a book reading and musical performance

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Art Society will present a book reading and musical performance of selections from “Bug Music,” the new book and CD from musician and professor David Rothenberg. The event will take place at the CAS Arts Center on Saturday, June 29 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Rothenberg has spent the last few years studying and playing duets with cicadas, crickets and beetles. Now, in “Bug Music: How Insects Gave Us Rhythm and Noise,” he explores the rhythm and noise of insects and their influence on human music, rhythm and dance.  Read more

‘Jazz on the Deck’

HAWLEY, PA—“Jazz on the Deck,” an every Wednesday feature during July and August at The Settler’s Inn, kicks off the summer series on July 3 with the Gypsy Jazz Quintet. There is no cover charge. The music begins at 6 p.m.

The Settler’s Inn is located on Hawley’s Main Avenue, and thanks to a covered deck the performances can be held rain or shine. The “Jazz on the Deck” line-up also includes Robert Kopec Quartet on July 10 and Thos Shipley Trio on July 17 and many more.  Read more

Life celebration concert for Jack Hardy and Maris Hearn

CALLICOON, NY — The Friends of Maris Hearn present the seventh annual Maris Hearn Life Celebration Concert, a Jack Hardy Song Night, at The Delaware Youth Center, 8 p.m., on Saturday, June 29. Doors open at 5 p.m. An open mic hosted by Little Sparrow takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The concert begins at 8 p.m. featuring David Massengill, who once performed as The Folk Brothers with Jack Hardy, Honor Finnegan, Angela Elizabeth Holup and Stuart Kabak.  Read more

‘Vetstock’ to be a star-spangled event

MILFORD, PA — Vetstock, a two-day long celebration on the Fourth of July weekend that will help raise funds to build a home for a severely disabled American veteran, comes to Milford’s Malibu Dude Ranch on Friday, July 5, and Saturday, July 6.
