Historical society holds fundraising variety show

HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne County Historical Society will hold a fundraising event, “First Annual Hysterical Society Variety Show,” on Friday, June 21, from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Cooperage. Emcee Bob Mermell will present an evening of entertainment by local talent, while the audience enjoys an all-you-can-eat dessert buffet, including coffee, tea and water.

Performers include comedians Roger Hunt, Jeff Hiller and Lars Hanson; Ramona Jan and her Marionettes, Bob Friedhoffer and his Scientific Magic and the Crackers.  Read more

Gay Pride Weekend has two events

REGION — This weekend is the 2013 Gay Pride weekend in the Catskills. The Gay Pride Dance is on Friday, June 21 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Catskill Distilling Company in Bethel, NY. $10 suggested donation. Day to Be Gay Festival will be held Saturday, June 22 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. at Hills Country Inn in Callicoon Center. There will be food vendors or bring your own picnic, as well as a dog of the day contest, craft and art vendors, a pie baking contest, music by DJ Mike, entertainment and special guests. $15 suggested donation.  Read more

Soul-stirring sounds in Hawley

Bonacic: casinos issue is "up to the people"

State Senator John J. Bonacic and Assemblyman Gary Pretlow last night introduced legislation (S.5883/A.8101) that is expected to pass the Senate and Assembly this week to authorize up to four casinos across three regions, including the Catskills, if voters approve the plan this November.  Read more

NACL presents “Wormholes”

HIGHLAND LAKE, NY — NACL Theatre presents the play “DDT, Wormholes or A Hypothetical Topological Feature of {19th century} Space/Time” on Sunday, June 23 at 4 p.m.

Inspired by quantum physics, insect mating rituals, texting emoticons, George Eliot’s Victorian novel “Middlemarch” and a growing sense of disconnect, this piece explores the question: what happens when we lose the ability to communicate? The audience is a critical part of the play’s unfolding; the characters cannot go beyond the introductory scene unless the audience actively engages change from one portal to another.  Read more

Contra dance at The Cooperage

HONESDALE, PA — On Saturday, June 22, there will be a contra dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at The Cooperage.

Contra dance is a form of traditional American set dancing with long lines of couples facing each other. Over the course of a dance each couple moves up and down the hall, interacting with the other couples in their line. The steps themselves, which are simple and easy to learn, are similar to those used in traditional square dances. A caller first teaches the figures to be done in each dance, and then ‘calls’ the dance as the music is played by live musicians.  Read more

Bill Sipos to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

MONTICELLO, NY — Bill Sipos, owner of Mr. Willy’s Restaurant, will be the subject of a roast to be held at his dining establishment on Friday, June 28 at 6 p.m.

Sipos will be the recipient of Recovery Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of his years of service and commitment to improving the lives of Sullivan County’s youth. To date, Bill Sipos continues to work diligently on the boards for CASA and Community Unity.  Read more
