Scott Samuelson, chair of the Sullivan County Legislature, gave the State of the County Address on May 24 at the government center in Monticello. The address reflected the fact that the county is still suffering the impacts of the great recession, but there was also a bit of good news. Samuelson said, “The county ended 2012 with encouraging news. Sullivan County sales tax revenues had come in more than $1 million greater than what had been anticipated in the 2012 operating budget. HONESDALE, PA — Matthew Holmes, 38, of Honesdale has been charged with accidentally shooting his daughter in the face. According to the Wayne County District Attorney and Honesdale Borough Police Department, on May 25, Holmes was visiting friends on 11th Street with his 15-year-old daughter. Read more
LACKAWAXEN TOWNSHIP, PA — In the Republican primary election on May 21, Michael Mancino received 177 votes, incumbent Brian Stuart received 170 and Ronald Tussel Jr. got 63. With no Democratic candidate in the race, it seems likely that Mancino will replace Stuart on the township board in 2014. Read more
The Sullivan County Legislature adopted the long-awaited new ethics law at a meeting at the government center in Monticello on May 23. Before the vote, legislator Cindy Gieger said she would vote in favor of the law with the understanding that a vote to restore a provision that would grant subpoena power to the new ethics board would be held before the law takes effect in 60 days.
