Former Sheriff Dan Hogue, who served two terms in Sullivan County, passed away on May 22. He was 74 years old.
Friends said he had been ill for some time.
He remained active after retiring in 2005 and last year was appointed to a committee in charge of reviewing the state of law enforcement in the county.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Hogue was known to many in the county as "a cop's cop," who was firm but compassionate. Read more

On May 10th, the students at the Jeffersonville Elementary School released the brown trout fingerlings that they had been raising from eggs all winter long into the East Branch of Callicoon Creek. It seemed as if this was the most exciting day in the lives of these boys and girls since Christmas. Child after child received one of the little fish in a plastic cup filled with water. They carefully carried the cup to the creek and then slipped the trout into the water. Read more

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — It’s week two of the championship foray and the action is intensifying across the spectrum of high school sports. In boys golf, Eldred freshman David Powers won the OCIAA Golf Championship. Powers shot a five-over-par 76 at Grossingers on May 14 to become the first Eldred golfer to win the OCIAA title since Henry Bosch did it in 2003, and the first freshman champion since Doug Novogrodsky of John S. Burke Catholic in 2001. Powers finished just one stroke ahead of Cornwall freshman Ryan Rodriguez. Both went to states a year ago. Read more
