Rapist sentenced to 14 years; Family Violence Response Team credited
Dennis DeGroat, 39, of Bloomingburg, will be spending 13 years in prison with 10 years of post-release supervision for the rape of a girl who was 13 years old. Read more
Burglary ring members sentenced for break-ins in four towns
The final two members of a burglary ring have been sentenced. Elliot Hernandez, 19, of Monticello, was sentenced to seven years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision for his role in four burglaries of homes in the Towns of Forestburgh and Thompson. Read more
Shohola man arrested for burglary of Barryville diner
Daniel Hipsman, 21, of Shohola, PA was arrested on February 2 on petit larceny and criminal mischief charges by Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies. Hipsman admitted to breaking into the Towne Diner in Barryville on January 23, and stealing approximately $40 dollars in cash. Read more
More gun resolutions in the pipeline
SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — At least two more local towns are considering resolutions opposing national gun control legislation proposed in the wake of the Newtown, CT shootings.
The Town of Fremont will vote on such a resolution at the town board’s next regular meeting on Wednesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. Read more
DRBC to review two pipelines
NORTHEAST, PA — In a reversal of a decision made in July 2012, the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) has determined that it will review two pipelines that go through Wayne and Pike counties. The review will be done “after the fact,” as the pipeline shave already been completed.
The Delaware Riverkeeper Network (DNR) had been urging the DRBC to take that action because the rules that govern the DRBC require it, and DNR would like the agency to compel the pipeline owners to take additional restoration action along the path of the lines. Read more
TGP court challenge redux; Cummins Hill appeal rejected by FERC
WASHINGTON, DC — When the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) came down on the side of the Tennessee Gas Pipeline (TGP), rejecting the appeal by the Pike County Cummins Hill protest group and other groups for further public hearings, TGP was smacked with another challenge, this time in federal court. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), for the years 1986 thorugh 2010, the average high temperature in this region on February 1 is 29.4 degrees Fahrenheit; by February 28, the average rises to 35.5 degrees. Union rep raises ‘conflict’ concerns; Foster care system at issue
Sandy Shaddock, the business representative of Teamsters Local 445, which represents some 600 Sullivan County employees, is raising concerns about Randall Parker, the commissioner of the Division of Health and Family Services (DFS) and possible conflict of interest because of changes he has made to foster care and child protective services in Sullivan County.
