Road trip

Trinidad, California is on the coast. A rock cliff lines the ocean view out of the window of the bed and breakfast where we are staying. We arrived at night, drove down from Portland, OR, and so I didn’t see the view until the morning. I was surprised when the sun poked through the fog and revealed the ocean.

Down below, huge rocks jut out from the water. From this distance, it’s difficult to imagine how big they are, but they look enormous. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before, otherworldly.  Read more

Think “Snow” at the Wurtsboro Art Alliance

WURTSBORO, NY — Wurtsboro Art Alliance (WAA) Gallery will open its 2013 season with an exhibit entitled “Snow,” to run from February 9 (during Wurtsboro’s Winterfest celebration) through March 3. “Snow” will feature the work of WAA members, including Michael Piotrowski, Roberta Rosenthal, Sandy Spitzer, David Munford and others.  Read more

Opening reception for featured artist at The Gallery at Chant Realtors

LORDS VALLEY, PA — Mariana Russo is the featured artist at The Gallery at Chant Realtors LV, 631 Rte 739. A colorful showcase of nature-inspired collage and paintings will be on exhibit and offered for sale from February 1 through 28. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, February 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. The gallery is open seven days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Vintage quilt show

YOUNGSVILLE, NY — Domesticities will host an opening reception on February 2 at 3 p.m. for quilt maker and quilt collector Mia Koerner, who will display some of her vintage quilts during the month of February.  Read more

Taste of the Tri-States dinner and music

PORT JERVIS, NY — The Port Jervis High School Drama Club will host an evening of food and entertainment at the third annual Taste of the Tri-States on Friday, February 1 at 6 p.m. in the Port Jervis High School gymnasium. Some of the area’s eateries will prepare specialty dishes for the event, and entertainment will be provided by the high-powered Irish rock band, EMISH.

Proceeds will be used to cover costs for the high school’s spring production of “Little Shop of Horrors,” to be presented March 15 through 17.  Read more

NACL Theatre beats fundraising goal

HIGHLAND LAKE, NY — NACL Theatre has exceeded its recent fundraising goal of $12,000, receiving $22,290 in donations from 241 people during a 30-day online Kickstarter campaign. The funds will enable the ensemble theatre company to finish its new work, “struck.” Funding was enhanced by a local sponsorship from Catskill Farms in Eldred.

In this play, a woman who suffers a stroke experiences (along with the audience) a surreal journey as her body, mind and soul dangle, sing, skate and dance between life and death.  Read more

Musicians gather for Great Sullivan County Foodraiser

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Stacy & Friends and Community Unity will hold the fifth annual Great Sullivan County Foodraiser, a musical benefit for county food pantries, on Saturday, February 2. From blues to jazz to country, the music starts at 6 p.m. and continues into the night at three venues: the Dancing Cat Saloon and Catskill Distillery in Bethel, Dutch’s Tavern in Rock Hill and Mr. Willy’s in Monticello. Hello, hope all is well with everyone. My mother is holding her own and doing better. She cracks me up with her schedule—seeing a home care nurse, physical therapist and social worker. She has a person coming in every day, which is good because she gets up and gets dressed. No lying around and being tired all day.

She has not been out except to the doctors. Hopefully when the weather gets warmer, she will get out and about. Thanks for all the well wishes; they keep her going and the prayers always work and are welcomed.  Read more

Ralph V. Calkin Jr.

Ralph V. Calkin Jr. of Cochecton, NY, a lifelong resident, passed away at home with his wife by his side on Wednesday, January 23, 2013. He was 82.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 90 Main St., Narrowsburg, NY. Burial was in Lake Huntington Presbyterian Cemetery.

Donations can be made to Red Fox Game Preserve, Cochecton, NY.
