Reflections on civic mindedness
Having been performing litter control duties on behalf of the National Park Service at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for over 40 years, I have one reflection that comes to mind that stands out above all others concerning a particular social phenomenon. One would think that our National Parks would be a matter of pride with the public since these lovely landscapes represent our nation’s beauty, wildlife and history. Thanking Judge Frank LaBuda
On February 20, 2008, a drug user stood before Judge Frank LaBuda in the Monticello courthouse awaiting his sentencing on drug charges. Daniel Itzhaky was the fourth person to be sentenced. The first three were sentenced to three to five years in prison and Daniel was sentenced to five years probation. Since then, Daniel has graduated from New York State University in Farmingdale, NY with summa cum laude honors, has sponsored several drug users in rehab centers on Long Island and has never touched any drugs or alcohol again. The Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company is preparing to slash and cut another path across the communities, forests, streams and wetlands of the Upper Delaware River, and our national and state agencies and the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) are all stepping aside to let it happen. Read more
For Sullivan County, our own fiscal cliff
Sullivan County property owners face the likelihood that the county legislature will pass a 2013 budget with a double-digit tax hike. In these tough economic times, putting this burden on already financially strapped citizens seems just plain wrong. Legislators know that a 13.7% tax increase will be quite painful for many taxpayers, yet few other options appear. Read more
