Nature calls outdoor lovers in New York

NEW YORK STATE — New York State has just launched a new, online newsletter to highlight the state’s many opportunities for outdoor activities and to offer information about sites of interest and natural beauty.

Published by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEC), the October issue of “Outdoor Discovery” shows the kinds of articles one can find online on a regular basis.  Read more

The Halloween Benefit Bash

Presented by The Wayne County Arts Alliance and The Cooperage Project, on Friday, 8PM - 11PM, at The Cooperage located at 1030 Main Street. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Fall Foliage Report

For this weekend, the Sullivan County Visitors Association is predicting up to a 70% color change. The foliage will be just beyond midpoint and exhibiting brilliant shades of golden yellows, awesome oranges, ruby reds and bold burgundy. William “Tom” Olver, of Boyds Mills, PA died Monday, September 17, 2012. He was 87.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 21, 2012 at 1 p.m. in the Calkins Baptist Church, 527 Calkins Road, Milanville, PA with the Rev. Lane Jones officiating.

Power line gets final approval from NPS

NEWARK, NJ — The Susquehanna-Roseland power line received final approval from the National Park Service when the agency issued a Record of Decision on October 1, affirming the route the utility preferred. According to supporters, in addition to boosting electric service reliability, the new line will create jobs, reduce electric bills for some customers and provide a significant economic stimulus to the region.  Read more

Settlement in housing meltdown

NEW YORK CITY — Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced a $7.8 million settlement with eAppraiseIT, formerly one of the nation’s largest real estate appraisal management companies, and its parent corporation, First American Corporation, for colluding with savings and loan giant Washington Mutual to inflate the values of homes. The settlement resolves charges that the corporation violated appraiser independence laws, which regulate the conduct of real estate appraisers.  Read more
