Noel Warren van Swol

Noel Warren van Swol, a lifelong area resident and community activist for more than 40 years, died unexpectedly as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident, on Monday, October 15, 2012. He was 70.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 22 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home with The Reverend Doctor Norman David officiating.

Burial was in the Halsey Cemetery, Long Eddy, NY.

Theodor Marxen

Theodor Marxen, a long-time resident of Eldred, NY died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at his son’s home in Red Bank, NJ. He was 83.

Theodor was born July 3, 1929 in Duisburg, Germany to Johann Peter and Margareta Marxen. He was the widower of Constance Marxen and pre-deceased by his son, Peter Marxen.

Theodor was a member of the Shohola Fire Police and several local hunting clubs.  Read more

Getting gas drilling done

Noel van Swol’s voice was courageous and always at the center of the storm. He had a big vision of the benefits gas drilling could bring to our community and a forceful determination to get it done. While it wasn’t easy to discuss tactics with him—he could be maddeningly stubborn—I often wished I had his clarity and focus. I mourn our loss.
