Siegfried Walter Ihrig of Callicoon, a retired Union Laborer for Local 17 Monticello, died Thursday, June 14 at CRMC, Harris, New York. He was 82.

District receives knotweed funding

HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne Conservation District has received $1,565 for a Japanese knotweed and invasive species demonstration site. Over the last decade, there has been a huge increase in the amount of Japanese knotweed and other invasive species along local waterways. In an effort to reduce non-point source pollution, in this case, soil erosion and sediment pollution, the conservation district is going to get rid of the knotweed and other invasive species along a section of the Lackawaxen River and replace it with a native vegetated buffer.  Read more

Learn conservation history on forest hike

MILFORD PA — A hike through the forest will introduce visitors to the history of conservation in America on Saturday, June 23, at Grey Towers National Historic Site, 122 Old Owego Turnpike. The moderate hike, which begins at 1:30 pm, will bring participants to the campsite replica of the Yale School of Forestry students who studied at Grey Towers in the early 20th century.

Regular tour fees apply and participants can tour the Grey Towers mansion for half price when tickets are purchased together.  Read more

Rhodes legacy lives on

UPPER DELAWARE REGION — Danilo Carvajal, 59, is the latest person in a long string of those who can thank Richard “Dick” Rhodes for their very life. While not directly rescued by Rhodes, Carvajal was saved by Erika Poston on her first day of service as a trained volunteer of the National Canoe Safety Patrol (NCSP), the organization Rhodes co-founded 30 years ago, and was passionate about, up until the day he died on April 17.  Read more
