WALTER P. JASPER

Walter P. Jasper, a long-time resident of Eldred, NY, died Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. He was 82.

Walter was born February 14, 1930 in Maspeth, Queens to Ida Tinnemeier and Walter Jasper. He was the widower of Anita Louise Jasper and pre-deceased by infant grandson, Patrick Luke Jasper.

Walter served his country after being drafted on May 18, 1951 during the Korean War. He served with the 62nd AAA outfit in Viernheim, Germany. He was a truck driver all of his life, loved what he did and enjoyed seeing all 48 states in his R-Model Mack truck.  Read more

MARGARET J. DEXTER BRANNING

Margaret J. Dexter Branning of Beach Lake, PA, a lifelong resident of the area, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012 at Ellen Memorial Health Care, Honesdale, PA. She was 84.

The daughter of the late Edward H. And Bessie Diehl Dexter, she was born September 1, 1927 in Atco, PA. Margaret graduated from Atco School, Damascus High School and Hayne Commercial School. She had worked for Charles and Catherine Dexter as a secretary, Charles Electrical, Plumbing and Heating Business and Hardware Store.

She was married for 61 years to Ray T. Branning, who had passed away on August 3, 2010.  Read more

Trout Release Day

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — A Sullivan West fifth-grader enjoys Trout Release Day at the Jeffersonville campus on May 11. There were six different stations for students to visit at the event. A craftsman described how he made fish carvings out of wood; the National Park Service had an enviroscape table; and the students were able to try fly casting, fly tying and a variety of fish crafts.  Read more

Garden day, discount composters at CCE

LIBERTY, NY — Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Sullivan County will hold a Garden Day on Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sullivan County Master Gardeners will hold their annual plant & flower sale, and healthy refreshments will be on sale by the Eat Smart New York Program.

Earth Machine compost bins are available, as supply allows. The cost is $35 per bin for those who pre-register, and pre-registrants will receive a free kitchen scrap bucket. Bin purchases on the day of the event will cost $55. Rain barrels will be on sale for $75 each.  Read more

Water Safety Month

NATION — May is National Water Safety Month, and with five drownings last summer, the National Park Service (NPS) teamed up with its recreational and emergency service partners to promote a “Wear It! Swimming, Boating, Fishing, Floating” safety program this year during May, which encouraged all river users to wear their lifejackets at all times.  Read more

Carpenter bees: Unwanted home improvements

In May, a friend had quite a few bees flying around his barn; they appeared like bumblebees and frequently could be seen chasing each other around, occasionally meeting in a mid-air grapple. I looked around the upper part of the structure and found a few round holes about the size that a .38 caliber bullet would make. These were not bullet holes; the bees chasing each other were male carpenter bees defending their territory.  Read more

Red Molly plays Tusten

NARROWSBURG, NY — Red Molly will perform at the Tusten Theatre on Bridge St. on Saturday, June 2 at 8 p.m. The female Americana trio plays roots/Americana/bluegrass music featuring three-part harmonies with banjo, Dobro and guitar. There will be two 45-minute sets.  Read more

Manescapes in Manor

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Morgan Outdoors will host a photography exhibit by local photographer LaVerne Black title “Manescapes” from June 3 to July 8, with an opening artist’s reception on June 3 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The black and white photographs in Manescapes portray horses’ manes. By eliminating extraneous elements from the frame, parts become a complete image.  Read more

Charlie Lang at UpFront

PORT JERVIS, PA — The UpFront Exhibition Space will open the summer with a show featuring the work of Charlie Lang on June 1, running through July 29. The public is invited to attend the summer artist’s reception on Saturday, June 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be live music by Walt Edwards along with complimentary food and refreshments.
UpFront currently has over 30 artists of all mediums included in this exhibit, including Alyta Adams, Nancy Davis-Kessler, Alan Kaplan, Wendell M. Upchurch and Greg Zukowski.  Read more

Plein air art program opens season

MILFORD, PA — The Come Paint with Me© plein air artists’ program will celebrate the opening of its 15th season with a special event to be held at Grey Towers National Historic Site on Thursday, June 7 at 10 a.m. Hosted by the U.S. Forest Service at Grey Towers and the Grey Towers Heritage Association, program founder/coordinator Joan Polishook of Lords Valley will narrate a power-point program, “All About Plein Air Painting.” The event will include guest speakers, refreshments and souvenirs for each participating artist.  Read more
