Early fly hatch on the river
After visiting a friend at the hospital in Port Jervis during late February, I saw that it was turning into a fairly decent day outside; the weather was partly cloudy and the temperature was climbing into the high 40s. It was a good afternoon to drive up Route 97 and scout the river. I was mainly looking for eagles and other raptors. The first flying critters I spotted, however, were not birds at all, but a mass of flying insects. I had encountered one of the first fly hatches of the season on the river; the emergence of the black stonefly. Read more
Fly fishing for women
ALTMAR, NY — Trout Unlimited will sponsor a fly-fishing seminar for women on June 2 and 3. The Salmon River Fish Hatchery in Altmar and the Salmon River will serve as the classrooms for this event.
The seminar is designed for women who are looking to learn or improve their fly-fishing skills. It will cover all topics from beginner to advanced. Read more
Pammer wins Telemark Masters Race in Vermont
PERU, VT—Bill Pammer is seen here just after crossing the finish line at the 27th annual Kare Anderson Telemark Ski Race at Bromley Mountain in Vermont on Sunday, February 26, winning the gold medal in the Telemark Masters Expert Category. Pammer, a resident of Bethel, NY and Sullivan County Planning Commissioner from 2004 to 2009, won in the Masters category and placed fourth overall in the entire experts category. Read more
Walls to go to trial; some charges dropped
After three days of testimony at a preliminary hearing, Pike County Judge Joseph Kameen ruled that a trial of Donald and Eleanor “Nelia” Wall, husband and wife, should be held to investigate whether they are guilty of the charges brought forth from a two-year grand jury investigation. Read more
School before Labor Day harms tourism?
WESTFALL, PA — Local tourism officials have asked the Delaware Valley School District to consider delaying the opening of school next fall until after Labor Day in order to support the local economy and give high school students and teachers an extra week of work. Read more
