Years of food and conviviality: A Main Street location through the decades

NARROWSBURG, NY — Now that there is a new restaurant inside 40 Main Street in Narrowsburg, the Heron, there seems to be a “now-things-are-as-they-should be” feeling in the community, because for the last five or six decades there has almost always been eatery of one sort or another in the space.

Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, it was the home of C & C Pizza Parlor, operated by Marty Criston and Bernie Creamer. Creamer, who still lives in Narrowsburg with his wife Carol, and whose children all graduated from the Narrowsburg School, said the town was quite a different place in those days.  Read more

Mid-winter milestones

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY—Put aside any talk of winter doldrums or “Blue Monday,” for there’s plenty to smile and cheer about as we reach the midpoint of the season. WASYL BOSAK

Wasyl Bosak of Glen Spey, NY died Saturday, January 21, 2012 at home. He was 91.

He was born August 25, 1920 in Ukraine, the son of the late Gregory and the late Katarina Bosak.

Wasyl married Ganna Homenuk Bosak and was formerly married to the late Vira Sapadasz Bosak. He worked as a plumber in New York City.

Wasyl was a member, trustee and treasurer of St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Glen Spey.  Read more

GEORGE J. HENSZ

George J. Hensz of Matamoras, PA passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Milford Senior Care, Milford, PA. He was 91.

He was born on June 10, 1920 in Narrowsburg, NY, the son of the late John and Julitta Flood Hensz.

George served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the proprietor of Hensz’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning in Port Jervis, NY for many years.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Matamoras and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #471 in Port Jervis.  Read more

HELEN M. HIRIS KROPF

Helen M. Hiris Kropf, a resident of Julia Ribaudo Extended Care Center, Lake Ariel, PA and formerly of Hawley, PA died Friday, January 20, 2012. She was 85.

Of Gottscheer descent, Helen was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 2, 1926 to John and Helen Koenig Hiris.

She graduated valedictorian from Bushwick High School in 1944 and was employed at the Lincoln Savings Bank, Brooklyn.

She met her husband, Fred Kropf, Jr., in August 1946 while vacationing at Kropf’s boarding house outside of Hawley, PA. They married June 18, 1950, and were married for 53 years when he died in January 2004.  Read more

WILLIAM C. KRUG

William C. Krug, Jr. of Milanville, PA and Lake Muskoday, NY, a retired construction engineer for the County of Sullivan and a long time area resident, died Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at his home. He was 86.

The son of the late William C. Krug, Sr. and Agnes Lawston Krug, he was born December 30, 1925 in Bronx, NY.  Read more

STANLEY DAVID LASKIN

Stanley David Laskin of Napa, CA, who grew up in Cochecton Center, NY and always considered it “home,” died at his daughter’s home in San Rafael, CA on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 after a courageous fight against cancer. He was 75.

Stan was born on November 30, 1936 to the late Harry and Frieda (Markowitz) Laskin, who lived in Cochecton Center, NY and raised three sons there.

A retired missile engineer since the late ‘50s, Stan’s work took him around the country from Vandenberg AFB in California to Cheyenne, Wyoming to Cape Canaveral, Florida.  Read more

ANNE R. (GRAUDS) LIEB

Anne R. (Grauds) Lieb of Lackawaxan, PA, formerly of Florida, died at her home on January 11, 2012 following an illness. She was 73.

She was born in Riga, Latvia to the late Fricis Grauds and Elsa Janssons Grauds.

She was married to Alan Lieb for 48 years.

Anne owned and operated her own restaurant. A family statement reads: “She was a beloved wife and mother. She was a great potter and also enjoyed blogging. A terrific baker and bartender, she was a loyal and trusted best friend.”  Read more

ELSIE LIFF

Elsie Liff of Winter Garden, FL and formerly of Bethel, NY, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012. She was 100.

Daughter of the late Nathan and Gussie (Hoffman) Lifschitz, she was born January 14, 1912 in Springfield, OH.

She is survived by her nieces, Toby Sommers and husband David of Clermont, FL and Jane Schatz of New York City; great-great nieces Samantha Sommers and Jessica Sommers; great-great nephew Benjamin Sommers; and great nephews Jimmie Schatz, Richard Schatz, and Nathan Salzman and his wife Ai.  Read more

NILES C. SCOTT

Niles C. Scott, formerly of Damascus, PA, entered into rest at his home in Tennessee on January 18, 2012. He was 74.

He was born April 15, 1937, son of Eleanor Scott and the late Russell C. Scott.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jean Weiss Scott; and four stepchildren. Also surviving are his brothers Russell and Donald; and sisters Marian Bush and Linda Lyons.

He is predeceased by a son, Harold.

Private viewing was held in Centerville, TN.
