Budding poets play with words

MONTICELLO, NY — The George L. Cooke fifth-grade poets enjoyed their recent unit of study, “Playing with Words.” They played with specific techniques, line breaks, stanza, figurative language (such as similes) rhyme and alliterations to make unique poems as tumbling snowflakes. The theme was winter, so all classes chose a winter-related image to use on the bulletin boards in the school’s hallways. The photos here display some of the results.

DVO presents ‘Rigoletto’ highlights

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Delaware Valley Opera (DVO) will present a program of highlights from Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto,’ at a special Season Opening Fundraiser at the DVAA, 37 Main St. The event will be held on Saturday, February 4, at 7 p.m., and will feature Francisco Perez-Abreu, Evelyn Thatcher, Alexander Caraballo, Jeremy Griffin and Caroline Tye, with pianist Violetta Zabbi. A reception will follow the performance. The cost of tickets is $25.

Form a krewe for Mardi Gras

HONESDALE, PA — The Greater Honesdale Partnership invites all businesses, non-profit and community groups from the greater Honesdale area and beyond to form a New Orleans-style krewe and participate in the fourth annual Mardi Gras on Main on February 18. Musicians are also sought, to play on street corners for donations (which they keep) from the passersby.  Read more

Entries sought for Chili/Wings Cook Off

HAWLEY, PA — Entrants are sought for the Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce’s 10th Annual Chili/Wing Cook Off, which will take place on Sunday, March 4 at Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Restaurant on Lake Wallenpaupack, Route 507, 2 miles east of Hawley.

Official judges are the Administrators from Wallenpaupack Area School District. First- place winner in both chili and wings will capture a trophy and $100 cash award. Awards will also be presented to second- and third-place winners. There will be first, second, and third place trophies for the coveted Peoples Choice category.  Read more

4-H celebration has international theme

LIBERTY, NY — The 4-H will hold its International & Discover 4-H Night, now in its 23rd year, on Friday, January 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension building, 64 Ferndale-Loomis Road. Enjoy displays and presentations celebrating the diversity of cultures around the globe as well as unique 4-H Programs in Living History.

Mushroom society heads to Scranton

SCRANTON, PA — Members of the Delaware Highlands Mushroom Society (DHMS) will participate in First Friday Scranton’s monthly art walk with “Wild About Mushrooms,” a display of color photographs and, nature permitting, specimens from recent local mushroom forays. Toboggan rides, scavenger hunt and more at Winter Carnival

LACKAWAXEN,PA — There will be outdoor fun and entertainment at the Winter Carnival at Big Bear on Sunday, January 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be ski/snowboard races, a big air contest, rail jam, an all-day scavenger hunt, lunch tray races and free Ski Patrol toboggan rides. Head to the rental shop to register to win a free wax and sharpen. You also won’t want to miss getting your picture taken with “The Bear.” There will also be activities for non-skiers in the lodge.

Valentine’s crafts with 4-H

LIBERTY, NY — Karen Mariner will lead a 4-H workshop on Valentine crafts on Saturday, February 4. For one price, participants have the option to do one or both of two projects: making a a craft stick trinket box in the morning session, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon; and making a chocolate bouquet in the 1 to 3 p.m. afternoon session.
