Liberty man arrested for failing to register as sex offender

On Wednesday December 28, 2011 the Village of Liberty Police Department arrested Mathew Smith, 25 of Liberty, on charges he violated conditions of the Sex Offender Registration Act. Smith, a level one sex offender, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Fallsburg with the assistance of the Fallsburg Police Department.  Read more

Sunoco Station attendant thwarts robbery in Honesdale

December 30, 2011 — The Honesdale Borough Police arrested JOSHUA J. COLEMAN age 19 for attempting to rob the Highhouse Sunoco Station. On December 23, 2011 at approx. 9:50 p.m, a white male approached the attendant at the Highhouse Sunoco gas station on Route 191 in the Borough of Honesdale. This male handed the attendant a note demanding money and cigarettes. The attendant refused to hand over the money and items, and called the police and told the male he had two minutes before the cops showed up.  Read more

Sparrowbush Man arrested for Criminal Sexual Act in the first degree.

On 12/27/2011 the New York State Police at Middletown arrested RIGOBERTO ARCE, age 59, of Sparrowbush, New York for one count of Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree, (Felony). The charge stems from and incident which occurred in October of 2010 involving a female juvenile.  Read more

Children aged 8, 10 and 12 arrested for arson

Kerhonkson, NY -- On Dec 28, 2011, the New York State Police at Ellenville responded to a fully involved structure fire on Upper Cherrytown Rd Kehonkson NY, in the Town of Rochester, Ulster County NY. The state police and the Kerhonkson/Accord Fire Department with the assistance of the Olive Fire Department, found a fully involved structure fire of an abandoned school house that dated from the late 1800’s.  Read more

As I leave office, I’d like to relay a few thoughts and suggestions about the process of local government. There is almost a brand new slate of legislators, who may find it comparatively easy to break with the status quo and move on to more open methods of government.  Read more

‘We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne’

The words for the most commonly sung song for English-speakers on New Year’s eve, “Auld Lang Syne,” come from an old Scottish ditty that was first published by the poet Robert Burns in 1796. Burns transcribed it (and made some refinements to the lyrics) after he heard it sung by an old man from the Ayrshire area of Scotland, Burns’s homeland. According to www.infoplease.com, “Auld Lang Syne,” which asks whether old friends and times will be remembered, is “one of the most popular songs that nobody knows the lyrics to."  Read more
