‘Layers’ explores domestic violence

NARROWSBURG, NY — “Layers,” an exhibit of mixed media work by Nancy Palubniak, opens with a reception on Friday, August 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Alliance Gallery at the Delaware Arts Center, 37 Main St. The exhibit will be on view through September 17.

“In my work, internalized experiences rewrite themselves in the physical attributes of the external self and are revealed through gesture, facial expression, demeanor, stance and attitude,” said Palubniak who works across disciplines to produce 2D and 3D pieces to explore issues related to domestic violence toward women.  Read more

Calling all talent for an open mic in Mountaindale

MOUNTAINDALE, NY — Mountaindale is calling all performers to a Music & Rhyme Open Mic Night on Saturday, August 27 at 8 p.m. in a Coffeehouse Jam at 62 Main St. Spoken word, live poetry and music will all be welcome. A $5 cover fee will include admission and refreshments, and will benefit community enhancement efforts by the Mountaindale Community Development Project. Each performer will have five minutes for family oriented material, with the possibility of an encore for talent particularly appreciated by the audience.  Read more

Wine Fest plus five at Bethel Woods

BETHEL, NY — This year’s Wine Festival at Bethel Woods, taking place on Sunday, August 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature five new regional wineries. Brimstone Hill, Glenora Wine Cellars, Hudson-Chatham Winery, Inspire Moore and Knapp Winery will join the other 20 regional wineries at the Market Sheds at Bethel Woos Center for the Arts. There will be specialty foods, cheeses, crafts, musical entertainment and wine appreciation seminars as well as the tasting.  Read more

Glykokokalos at Bluestone

MILFORD, PA — The BlueStone Gallery will host a new exhibit, starting August 26, titled “21st Century Multiples,” featuring the work of local artist Yanni Glykokokalos. An artist’s reception will be held at the gallery on August 27 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The exhibit will feature original collages and paintings by the artist, along with enlarged Giclee prints of the original works. The high-quality ink jet prints are the 21st century version of the historic printmaking processes.  Read more

‘Ain’t Misbehavin’’ is Forestburgh finale

FORESTBURGH, NY — The Forestburgh Playhouse brings to life the ‘20s and ‘30s in the 1978 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” featuring the music of the legendary Fats Waller. The musical will run from Tuesday, August 23 through Sunday, September 4, with evening performances presented every Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and matinee performances on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.  Read more

I am a camera…

It’s yet another expression that floats in and out of my consciousness from time to time. I find myself saying it more and more as I wander the countryside snapping away. Years ago, while working for a different newspaper, I consistently got the same note at staff meetings: “decent copy, lousy pictures.” Outraged, I defended myself by insisting that I am not a photographer, but a writer who is forced to take pictures along the way.  Read more

DVO celebrates silver with gala concert

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Delaware Valley Opera (DVO) will celebrate its Silver Anniversary with a gala concert, “Singers of the Valley,” to be held at the company’s longtime home in the Tusten Theater on Saturday, August 27 at 8 p.m. Celebrating 25 years as a major contributor to the artistic life of the area, the DVO has organized a group of DVO artists from the past and current seasons to regale the audience, singing a program of popular and operatic favorites.  Read more

LESLIE ZACHARIA CLEARWATER

Leslie Zacharia Clearwater (Zac, Fez) of Damascus, PA died on August 9, 2011. He was 53.

He was born to Evelyn and Bernard Solomon in Manhattan on April 7, 1958.

Zac graduated from Westbury High School and received a BPS from the Culinary Institute of America. He also went on to become a Certified Hypnotherapist.  Read more
