Golf course gets new owner

The former Port Jervis Golf Course comes with a bit of history. It sits on a spot that once housed Fort Van Auken, which, according to a plaque, was the site of an Indian attack that was successfully resisted in 1779.  Read more


Gale McCarthy of Glen Spey, NY, a loving mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2011, at her home. She was 57.

Gale was born in West Orange, NJ on June 4, 1953, to parents Howard and Florence Dubanowich.

She attended Livingston High School and went on to receive her LPN from St. Barnabas Medical Center, working at various practices over several years. In recent years, she sold real estate, collected and traded antiques and ran a successful artisan antique jewelry creations business.  Read more


Emma O’Connell of Middletown, NY, a certified social worker, died on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at O.R.M.C., Horton Campus. She was 63.

The daughter of the late Frank and Marion Nabholz Gawors, she was born on November 29, 1947 in the Bronx, NY.

Emy married Joseph O’Connell on August 17, 1968 in the Bronx. They adopted two children and opened their home to 19 foster children over the years. She was a gentle, loving woman of undying faith and courage who was an inspiration to all. Emy will remain in our hearts.  Read more


Mary Whalen Parker of Canajoharie, NY died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. She was 89.

She was born January 29, 1922 in Canajohaire, the daughter of Joseph and Ellen Tunnicliff Whalen.

She married William Henry Parker Jr. on April 11, 1944 in Canojaharie.

Mary graduated from Ithaca College in 1943 with a B.S. in education. She was a physical education teacher in schools in Eldred, NY and Minneola, LI as well as Canojaharie. She later became a noontime aide for Canojaharie schools.  Read more


Harry L. Wilcox of Fremont, NY, a farmer and maple syrup producer at the Wilcox Farm and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, March 27, 2011 at the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown, NY. He was 82.

The son of the late James and Katherine Stoesser Wilcox, he was born June 3, 1928 in the Town of Fremont.  Read more
