JIMMY SCHWARTZ

Jimmy Schwartz of Starlight, PA, formerly of Weston, CT, died Sunday, March 13, 2011, in the Community Medical Center. He was 76.

He and his wife, the former Sari Facher, celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary on November 20.

He was born in New York City, the son of the late David and Pearl Schwartz. He was a Rotarian and the innkeeper of The Inn at Starlight Lake and Restaurant.  Read more

MARY A. PILIOURAS SPATH

Mary A. Piliouras Spath, a waitress, bookkeeper and homemaker, passed away on March 1, 2011 at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Center, Liberty, NY. She was 89.

The daughter of the late Anathawasios and Catherine Piliouras, she was born January 25, 1921 in Birmingham, AL. She was the widow of Wayne E. Spath, who passed away on April 8, 2007.

Mary was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Peekskill, NY.  Read more

WALTER SIEGL

Walter “Wallyworld” Siegl, of Wallkill, NY, passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Vassar Brother’s Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was 64.

Son of the late Anton and Johanna Gargar Siegl, he was born on March 13, 1946 in the Bronx, NY.

A hard and dedicated worker, Walter was a dockworker for Dellwood Dairy in Yonkers, NY and also worked for Foam & Wash Car Wash. An avid fisherman, known for his sense of humor, Walter loved his family and put others’ needs before his own.  Read more

Jack Hardy

Jack Hardy of Callicoon, NY and New York City, died on Friday, March 11, 2011 in Manhattan from complications of lung cancer. He was 63.

He was born in South Bend, IN on November 23, 1947 to Lillian and Gordon Hardy. He grew up in New York City, Aspen, CO and Durham, CT. His mother is a painter and his father is past dean of students at the Julliard School and a past president of the Aspen Music Festival.  Read more

JOSEPH E. GUTTILLA

Joseph E. Guttilla of Honesdale, PA died Saturday, March 12, 2011, at his home. He was 86.

He is survived by his wife, the former Violetta D’Agostino.

LEO V. KEUN JR.

Leo V. Kuen Jr. of Port Jervis, NY passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at his home. He was 82.

He was born November 5, 1928 in Narrowsburg, NY, the son of the late Leo and Emily V. Kuen, Sr.

Leo served during World War II with the U.S. Army. He was a retired construction worker for Union Local # 17 in Newburgh, NY.  Read more

GAETANA ‘DONNIE’ ADORANTE

Gaetana “Donnie” Adorante, a homemaker, died Friday, March 11, 2011, at Sullivan County Adult Care Center, Liberty, NY. She was 98.

She was born in the Bronx on February 18, 1913, the daughter of Gaetano and Maria Giagrande Ciardi. She was married to the late Julius Adorante, who died in 1993.  Read more

The rewards of backyard bird feeding are many. While I frequently see chickadees, cardinals, blue jays, juncos, goldfinches and nuthatches just outside my kitchen door, a new visitor showed up sporadically this winter to take advantage of the black oil sunflower seeds offered there.  Read more

Mushroom society welcomes new members

HONESDALE, PA — There will be a meeting of the Delaware Highlands Mushroom Society (DHMS) on Monday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Honesdale Wellness Center at 602 Church Street. The society was started last year as an organization bringing together fungi enthusiasts and those interested in learning about mushrooms. It hosted several walks last year in search of mushrooms, tapping into local knowledge and informing those beginning to learn.  Read more

BLOOMING GROVE, PA — The Pike County Conservation District will present “Dirt! the Movie” at the district office in Blooming Grove at 7 p.m. on March 23.
